Lyle Norman Scheel, age 74, of Brainerd, passed away peacefully at his home on November 19, 2021, after several months of illness.
Lyle was born on September 27, 1947, in Stillwater to Norman and Esther (Waldo) Scheel. He grew up in Stillwater and attended Stillwater High School, where he met Sue Cheney at a dance at the Armory. Months later they started dating and they knew it was for real. Soon Lyle would graduate from High School in 1965 and leave his sweetheart behind.
Lyle joined the US Army and served from 1966 – 1969. He took Basic Training at Fort Leonard Wood, MO and received his carpenter training. Lyle got his orders to report to Fort Richardson, Alaska and joined the 56th Engineer Company, where he completed his years of Service.
While still in the Military, he made a wedding proposal to the girl he left behind and was soon planning a small wedding to take place in Alaska. Sue and her parents flew to meet him. The couple married on June 15, 1968, where they found a small apartment and finished his last year of service.
Lyle was Honorably discharged from the US Army on May 29, 1969, and they drove home down the Alcan Hwy with their 6-week-old baby. They settled in Stillwater and raised 3 boys. He supported his family working at 3M as a machinist where he designed and built several patents for the company. Lyle retired after 41 years of service.
In 1985 they purchased a trailer and found a lot on North Long Lake at Creger’s Ojibwa Campground where they enjoyed fishing, boating, card playing and relaxing. They made many lifelong friends and enjoyed every summer weekend for 20 years.
He loved the lake and the Brainerd Lakes area so much that they purchased a lot and he and his boys built a retirement home for he and his wife, where he finished out the remainder of his life.
Lyle is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Susan; sons: Tim (Christine), Craig (Rochelle), David (Heather); seven grandchildren, Nick (Shelby), Justice, Anna, Dillon, Ellie, Mandy and Timmy.
Lyle is preceded in death by his parents; sister, Carol Ryberg.
A memorial service for Lyle will be held on Friday, December 3, 2021,11 AM, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Brainard. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service.
