A Celebration of Life will be held on May 20th, 11:00 a.m. at Halvorson Taylor Life Events Center, in Brainerd.
Bruce was born the eldest of eleven, to Blanche (Inwards) and Ellsworth Johnson, on August 23, 1940. He passed peacefully in his sleep Saturday, May 7, 2022. He will be laid to rest at The Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery.
Bruce had a full life in his 81 years. As a young man he joined the United States Navy, as a photographer, so he “didn’t have to shoot anyone with a gun” as a proud non-combatant. In the last few months, he proudly recounted his time being on the USS Saratoga out of Florida. His passion for capturing life and those who he cared about most, was evident in the hundreds of pictures he has taken and developed. Photography was not his only passion. Bruce was a dedicated member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church and loved volunteering at The Dorcus. He also enjoyed agate hunting, a passion he passed down too many of his children, along with genealogy, traveling and history. He also took great pride in building a home and had a great passion for AMC Eagles.
Over the years since leaving the US Navy, he has done many things, from owning a business with his brother (Lee Allen Signs), to being a tow truck driver and working for the State.
He was also blessed with many grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Bruce is survived by children Lindy Johnson, Lee (Fran) Johnson, Greg (Missy) Spaid, Angela (Dave) Vadnais, Quay (Jaime) Spaid, Alyssa Johnson and Ellie Feld; grandchildren and great-grandchildren; brothers John (Deb) Johnson, Sonny (Joyce) Johnson and Jack Johnson; sisters Delia Thomsen, Myra Schultz, Nita (James) Payno, Kim (Mike) Switala.
Bruce was proceeded in death by his son, Michael Johnson; parents, Blanche (Inwards) and Ellsworth Johnson, brothers: Richard Johnson, Bobby Johnson; sister, Sylvia (Mike) Vogt.
Due to COVID, no cemetery service will be held at this time. We ask that you are respectful of all in attendance and their attempts at social distancing and/or their choice to wear a mask, although not required.
In lieu of flowers donations to The Dorcus would be appreciated.
