Dorothy (Hoplin) Weiss, almost 97 years old, of Brainerd passed away, surrounded by her family at her daughter’s home in Brainerd on Friday, July 12, 2024. Dorothy was born on July 17, 1927, in Walden Township to Nils & Alice (Glover) Hoplin. She grew up in the area and attended Klatt and Maple Hill Country Schools and Pine River High School. Dorothy married Adolf (Bud) Weiss on June 25, 1945, at the age of 17, and together they took over the Weiss family farm in Bungo Township. They farmed for over 40 years, initially having dairy cattle before switching to beef cattle. Despite the long hours milking cows and working in the fields, Dorothy found time to raise two children, a large garden, can and preserve fruits and vegetables, maintain the lawn, grow flowers, crochet and embroider. She was active in the Maple Hill Lutheran Church, teaching Sunday School, Bible School and Women’s Mission Groups for more than 30 years. In her spare time, Dorothy baked and decorated cakes for special occasions for people in the community (weddings, anniversaries and graduations). In 1991, they sold the farm and moved to rural Brainerd to be closer to family. Dorothy continued her interest in gardening, raising flowers and crocheting. In addition, she was active in church, took care of her grandchildren and worked at the local Senior Center. Her last six years were spent at Northern Lakes Senior Living in Baxter and the last 6 months at her daughter’s home
Dorothy is survived by her children, Douglas (Barbara Mann) Weiss and Virginia (Jeffrey) Rogers; grandchildren, Zachary Rogers, Seth (Kensey) Rogers, Lana Rogers and Matthew Weiss; great-grandchildren, Kalia Weiss, Juniper Rogers, Bellamy Rogers and Maris Rogers.
She is preceded in death by her parents; husband Adolf (Bud) Weiss.
Funeral service for Dorothy will be held on Wednesday, July 24, 2024, at 11AM at Halvorson Taylor Life Events Center. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Interment at Oakland Cemetery.
