Gary O’Neal Deming age 77 formerly of Brainerd passed away on August 29, 2023, in Orlando, Florida at the Certus Memory Care Center.
Gary was born on December 27, 1945, to Lester & Grace Deming in Marshall, MN. After graduation Gary went to Brainerd Area VOTEC for Auto Mechanics. He also joined the Minnesota Army National Guard (MANG) in 1965. In 1969, he married Judy Anderson. Together they purchased a farmhouse in Brainerd, which became his only true home. They had two wonderful children, Lee and Laura. After their divorce, Gary met Elaine Young whom he married in 1998. Gary gained five children who learned to love him like a father. Gary’s final position in the MANG was the Battalion Maintenance Office with the rank of Chief Warrant Officer 3 at Camp Ripley, MN. Gary retired from MANG in December 2005 after putting in over 40 years of service. Gary also had a love for horses. He competed in horse shows on weekends during the summer months in 7 different events where he accumulated over 400 trophies. Traveling became huge part of his life, many summers going across country with a pop-up camper and the three youngest kids in tow. Gary loved to travel. He has been to 10 different foreign countries and all 50 states. He enjoyed horseback riding, golfing, playing cards, gardening, feeding the birds and his beloved chipmunk Chipper.
He will be deeply missed by his children, Lee (Ariel) Deming, Laura (Shawn) Pratt, Mark Young, Nancy Christianson, Lisa Steffen, Julie (Mike) Garvey, and Amy (Steve) Narvaez; grandchildren, Zoey and Lily, Taylor, Connor, Logan, Ryan (Kelley), Jennifer (Keaton), Levi, Casey, Kaitlyn (Spencer), Chad, Morgan, Cameron, Whitney (Ryan), Tyler, Isabel and Elliana; 3 great grandchildren Brooklyn, Ryleigh and Avery; sister, Pat Benson. Gary is preceded in death by his parents; wife, Elaine; sisters, Donna Jones and Jan White; also an infant brother.
Funeral services for Gary will be held on Friday, September 8, 2023, at 1:00 PM at the Halvorson Taylor Life Events Center, 512 S 8th Street in Brainerd. Visitation 11:00 AM-1:00 PM. Lunch will follow the services. Interment Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery in Little Falls, Minnesota.
