Gary Elmer Johnson, age 82, of Brainerd, passed away on Friday, October 4, 2024. Born on February 3, 1942, in Brainerd to Elmer & Dorothy (Hendricks) Johnson, Gary was a lifelong resident of his beloved hometown. A proud graduate of Brainerd High School, he carried the values of his community close to his heart throughout his life.
Gary was known for embodying kindness, positivity, generosity, helpfulness, and truly had a heart of gold. His deep faith was a cornerstone of his life, guiding his actions and his unwavering support for his family and friends. These virtues were recognized by all who had the privilege of knowing Gary, reflected in every aspect of his life and in the love he generously shared.
Gary dedicated many years of service working at Perkins and Westside Cafe, where he was a well-known and beloved figure. He was a faithful member of Trinity Lutheran Church, his commitment to his church and community was evident through his volunteer work at Church and Woodland Senior Living, where he also enjoyed living since 2007. His passion for helping others and making a positive impact in the lives of those around him was truly inspiring.
An avid Minnesota Twins fan, Gary cherished the moments spent attending games with his family. These outings were not just about the sport but were a testament to his love for spending quality time with his loved ones, creating lasting memories together.
Gary leaves behind his devoted sister, Shirley Thiesse; his cherished nephews and nieces, Darren (Terri) Thiesse, Karla (Paul) Fauk, Glenda (Craig) Kunde, Gina (Daryl) Thesing, Nathan (Rebecca) Thiesse, Turena Johnson-Lane, and Melissa (Jason) Heisel; as well as many grand nieces and nephews, and great-grand nieces and nephews who will miss him deeply.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Elmer and Dorothy; his brother, Marvin; and brother-in-law, Wayne Thiesse.
A funeral service to celebrate the life and legacy of Gary Elmer Johnson will be held on Thursday, October 10, 2024, at 3 PM at Halvorson Taylor Life Events Center. Family and friends are invited to visit one hour prior to the service. Gary will be laid to rest at Riverside Cemetery. Memories and condolences can be shared at www.halvorsontaylor.com.
