Joey Halvorson

JoAnn Margaret Halvorson (Joey) age 83, died on July 20 at her home in Nisswa after an extended battle with ALS. She was born on April 15th, 1943, in Minneapolis, MN. Visitation and Celebration of Life will be at the Congregational Church in Brainerd. Visitation will be on August 7th from 5pm-7pm and August 8th, one hour before the service. Celebration of life service is at 11:00am.

Joey was predeceased by her parents Gerald and Bernice Halvorson. Joey is survived by her sister Sue Bjerkestrand (Joel) of Scottsdale, Arizona, brother Marty Halvorson (Jan) of East Gull Lake, daughter Susan LeDean (Loick) of St. Louis, Missouri and many grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins.

The list of accomplishments by Joey is too long to mention. She graduated 3rd in her Brainerd High School class of 1961, and from Augsburg University in 1965. Joey was inducted into Augsburg’s Athletic Hall of Fame. She received the Brainerd Public Schools Distinguished Achievement Hall of Fame award and was the 2023 Brainerd Citizen of the year. What Joey saw as more important than her many accomplishments were her cameras. When asked about her camera she responded that it was her way of meeting people and becoming a part of their lives. Joey has taken thousands of pictures of people and nature and was recognized as the Photographer of the Year. It was through her pictures that Joey generously shared her love. Her photography and her way of inviting people into a relationship will be her legacy.

We are thankful for Joey’s amazing circle of friends and the care given to her as she struggled with ALS. In leu of flowers, you may contribute to the Brainerd High School Foundation in Joey’s scholarship fund or The ALS research at the University of Minnesota.
