Kay Marie Adler, age 68, of Brainerd, passed away at her home on Monday, September 18, 2023. Kay was born at St. Mary’s Hospital in Detroit Lakes, Minnesota on October 13, 1954, to Milo & Hazel (Jasken) Hoban.
Kay initially graduated from Detroit Lakes Area Vocational School as a Licensed Practical Nurse before attending Anoka Ramsey Community College to achieve an Associate of Science in Nursing and become a Registered Nurse. She started her career on the surgical floor, first at the hospital of her birth, St. Mary’s, and then later as a traveling nurse. These adventures brought her to patients as far away as Alaska and Hawaii. After moving to Illinois, she fell in love and married Andrew Lee Adler. They made their home in Gurnee, Illinois where they welcomed their son, Nick. While in Gurnee, Kay worked at Lake Forest Hospital in the Telemetry and Radiology departments before moving on to care for hospice patients. She later returned to Lake Forest Hospital to care for patients in the Women’s Imaging department, assisting in the detection and treatment of breast cancer. Five years ago, Kay retired and moved to Brainerd to live in her dream home on the Mississippi River. She was the caregiver of the neighborhood, being nicknamed the “Angel on the Block”. Kay enjoyed many walks at the local Arboretum. She was a wonderful wife, mother, sister and aunt. Kay adored and was masterful at baking, the results of which she shared with a lucky many.
Left to cherish her memory are her son, Nick; siblings, Larry (Cheryl) Hoban, Gary (Jackie) Hoban, Wanda (Mike) Doty, Susan (Bill) Tollefson, Kevin Hoban; brother-in-law, Brad Grant; and sisters-in-law, Teresita Adler and Tina Thornton; many nieces and nephews; many great nieces and nephews.
