Robert Harting

February 18, 1948 — December 7, 2019

Robert went to his heavenly home on Saturday, December 7, 2019. Bob put in a long and courageous battle with lung cancer. He was born on February 17, 1948 to Clarence L. and Shirley M. (Norton) Harting in Brainerd, MN. Bob graduated from Brainerd High School in 1966 and enlisted in the National Guard 194th Unit in 1967 and served his country until 1974. He was employed by Potlatch Corporation for over 30 years retiring, when the plant closed and was President of Local 79 United Paperworkers for many of those years. Bob was a 51-year member of the Brainerd American Legion Post 255, where he held many offices. He shared his BBQ sauce recipe with the Post, making their Friday night ribs famous. He enjoyed his family, grandchildren and great grandsons, along with his many friends. He loved music, singing karaoke, golf and playing the game of Aggravation with friends. He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Judi; his brother, Steve (Cheryl) of LaPine, OR; his four sons, Wayne (Stacey), Trevor (Jennifer), Chad (Jody), and Jed (Rhonda) Harting all living in the Brainerd area; 3 step-sons, Jerry (Christy) Thurmes, Pickford, MI, John (Chris Miller) Thurmes, Brooklyn Park, MN and Bill Thurmes, Fayetteville, NC; 11 grandchildren; 7 step-children; 4 great grandsons; 3 nephews and many cousins. He is preceded in death by his parents; and his nephew, Danny Harting. A celebration of Bob’s life will be held on Wednesday, December 18, 2019 at 11AM at Halvorson Taylor Life Events Center (512 S 8th St, Brainerd). Visitation will be held on Tuesday, December 17, 2019 from 4-7pm, at the funeral home and one hour prior to the service. Please refer memorials to Brainerd American Legion Riders. The family would like to thank Edgewood Vista and Horizon Hospice Staff for their loving and compassionate service they gave to Bob during his stay.
