Steven S Engel

Steven Scott Engel, age 71, of East Gull Lake, passed away at a Wellstead of Rogers Advanced Memory Care on Thursday, December 21, 2017 after a valiant battle with Lewy Body Dementia. Scott was born on July 10, 1946, in Slayton, MN to John T. & Evelyn (Kofoed) Engel. He graduated from Burns HS in Norfolk, NE in 1964 and married Linda Olsen on December 22, 1967 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Brainerd. He attended the University of Nebraska, Lincoln, obtaining a degree in business administration. Daughter Nicole was born while Linda was attending college in St. Cloud, MN and the family then moved to Brooklyn Park, Maplewood and Stillwater while Scott was employed as a marketing representative for Reliance Insurance. In 1976, they returned to East Gull Lake when he purchased partnership with Martha Rach, Rach Insurance Agency, Staples, MN. Late in the 80’s he partnered with Robert and John Weizenegger to purchase Opsahl Insurance Agency, changing the name to Weizenegger-Engel. In 1991, he and Linda traveled to Romania and adopted two babies. After selling the Independent Insurance Agency, the family spent a few winters in Park City, Utah but remained residents of East Gull Lake. He served in the Brainerd Unit of the National Guard, was a member of the East Gull Lake City Council for many terms, helped establish the Brainerd Crisis Line and enjoyed boating, fishing, golfing, mountain skiing and spending time with his family in Canada. Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 50 years, Linda; son, Tony Engel of East Gull Lake, daughter, Gina Engel of Duluth; siblings: Jon (Bea Ann) Engel of Omaha, NE, Mike (Patti) Engel of Eagan, Jeff (Dana) Engel of Omaha, NE, Kim (John) Julis of Omaha, NE and Todd (Leslie Kim) Engel of Tucson Arizona plus several nieces and nephews. Scott is preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Nicole; sister, Julie Maas. A memorial service celebrating Scott's life will be held on Saturday, January 6, 2018 at 11AM at Trinity Lutheran Church. Visitation will be held on Friday, January 5, 2018 from 4-7PM at Halvorson Johnson Funeral Home - BRAINERD CHAPEL, and one hour prior to the service, Saturday at the church. In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials to the Lewy Body Dementia Association or Trinity Lutheran Church, and extends special gratitude to Home Instead, Staples Reflections, Northern Lakes Senior Living, Wellstead of Rogers, and Methodist Hospice for ongoing care this past year.
