For families who choose cremation, deciding how to honor a loved one's remains is a deeply personal step. Many find comfort in scattering ashes—a symbolic gesture that can bring peace and closure. While this practice is generally unregulated, a few guidelines are worth keeping in mind.



Things to Consider:

• Private Property: Always get written permission from the property owner before scattering ashes.
• Public Parks: Most parks require a permit, so be sure to check with the appropriate local authority.
• Unregulated Public Land: There's no formal regulation, but it's best to be respectful and use good judgment.
• Proximity to Roads or Trails: Avoid scattering ashes within 100 yards of roads, trails, or other public paths.
• Cremation Container: Be sure to dispose of the container separately and in an eco-friendly way.
• Inland Waters: The Clean Water Act applies, so you’ll need a permit from the agency responsible for the waterway.
• Ocean Scattering: Ashes must be released at least three nautical miles from shore. Within 30 days, the EPA must be notified in writing. Any flowers or ceremonial items must be biodegradable—avoid anything made of plastic or synthetic material.
